• For applicants whose university degree was not imparted in English, a minimum score of 600 for paper-based, 250 for computer-based and above 100 for internet-based in TOEFL or a minimum band score of 6.5 in IELTS is required.

The Dr Goh Keng Swee (GKS) Scholarship is a private sector scholarship administered by theAssociation of Banks in Singapore (ABS).

Each year, 3 to 4 scholarships are awarded to outstanding individuals from 15 Asia Pacific economies (Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia,Philippines, PRC, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Myanmar) to pursue undergraduate studies at local universities in Singapore i.e. National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU), Singapore Management University (SMU) and Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD).

The Dr GKS Scholarship Fund was set up by the financial community in Singapore in honour of the former Deputy Prime Minister, who fostered Singapore’s economic development and growth as a reputable international financial centre.

Eligibility
The Dr GKS Scholarship is open to students who are citizens/passport holders of Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, PRC, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, Laos and Myanmar. Singapore citizens and PRs are not eligible to apply for the Dr GKS Scholarship.

The Dr GKS Scholarship is highly selective. Applicants should:

• Concurrently apply for admission to NUS, NTU, SMU or SUTD. Applicants should adhere to the university’s admission deadlines and guidelines;
• Demonstrate leadership qualities and possess good academic and co-curricular activities (CCA) achievements;
• Have sat for, or made private arrangements to sit for the SAT I;
• Preferably be below 25 years of age; and
• Select a course of study relevant to the finance sector. Most other courses (such as Engineering, Computing, Law), except specialised courses like Medicine, will also be considered.

Admission Requirements
The minimum requirements for admission for Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programme are:

• Good Master’s degree with academic grades of B+ and above or CGPA of 4.00/5.00 and above
• Bachelor’s degree with minimum 2nd Class Honours (Upper)
• Bachelor’s degree with 1st Class Honours might be considered for direct entry to PhD programme
• English language competency
• ability to pursue research in the proposed field of advanced study

GRE Requirement
GRE is not a mandatory requirement for both local and international applicants. An interview will be conducted for applicants who have graduated from overseas universities to assess the applicant’s language competency and potential to pursue independent research.

TOEFL/IELTS Requirement
Applicants whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores. Test dates must be within 2 years or less from the date of application.

• At least 8 years of post-graduation experience including 5 years of managerial experience
• Possess excellent undergraduate degrees
• Have demonstrated leadership qualities and potential in his/her organisation and/or community service
• A good score in TOEFL or IELTS is required for applicants from non-English speaking university
• Applicants must be nominated by the head of company/organisation/ministry in which the applicant is serving
• You should not be on paid employment or accept paid employment or concurrently hold any other scholarship, fellowship, bursary or top-up allowance during the prescribed period of the award

Bond
There is no bond attached to the scholarship.

Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is a research-intensive university with globally acknowledged strengths in science and engineering. Through its four colleges with 12 schools, and two autonomous entities, the National Institute of Education and S Rajaratnam School of International Studies, NTU provides high quality global education to more than 23,000 undergraduates and 10,000 graduate students. The student body includes top scholars and international Olympiad medallists from the region and beyond. The Nanyang President’s Graduate Scholarship (NPGS) is a competitive and prestigious scholarship scheme designed to encourage outstanding graduates or final-year students to take their first step towards a leading research career by studying for a doctoral degree programme (PhD) at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU), one of Asia’s leading research universities. Funding will be provided for up to 4 years for NPGS awardees.

Number of awards available
Up to 30 NPGS awards will be made available in each Academic Year. Successful candidates will be known as Nanyang President’s Graduate Scholars.

Minimum qualifications
To qualify for a NPGS award, you must have a First Class Honours degree or equivalent at Bachelor’s level and applicants should also demonstrate excellent research abilities. The PhD research will be in any topic agreed between you and your chosen NTU supervisor within the research activities of NTU. At the time of application, if you have not yet completed your undergraduate degree programme, you will need to furnish documentation from your university that you are on track to get a First Class Honours degree or equivalent. Failure to do so will disqualify you from the NPGS award, in which case you may be considered for other NTU PhD research scholarships, subject to meeting the selection criteria.

Qualification
During the first year, you will be expected to take relevant courses and to work towards passing the qualifying examination. In the event that this qualification is not met, there will be no conversion to a Masters degree for the NPGS awardees.

Stipend and allowances
The NPGS award terms are:

1. Monthly stipend of S$3200
2. Full support of tuition fees
3. Conference allowance for two major overseas conferences in the 4-year period
4. One-time IT allowance of S$1500
5. Annual grant of S$500 for journal subscription or book purchase
6. Thesis preparation allowance
7. Priority for subsidised campus accommodation

Teaching
Upon passing the qualifying examination, NPGS awardees will be expected to undertake some undergraduate teaching (up to a limit of 10 hours per week). Awardees will be reimbursed if their teaching hours exceed what is required by the framework of their PhD training. Undergraduate teaching contributions will demand a high level of English language proficiency and you may be required to undertake English language courses as necessary in your first year.

Nationality
There is no restriction as to the nationality of candidates but, all things being equal preference will be given to Singapore Citizens and Singapore Permanent Residents.
